My Approach to Providing Personal Support
I believe that all forms of therapy and counselling benefit from mindfulness. Without the ability to see, observe and understand what is happening with our thoughts, feelings and actions, any form of therapy is unlikely to be successful. Mindfulness skills heighten the ability to do this, so that the counselling can bring big improvements and changes to our lives.
The aim of many therapies is to find ways of eliminating or reducing what you might perceive as being a ‘problem’. Nothing wrong with that of course, but we can also look at how to make our lives happier, more joyful, peaceful, lighter – whatever makes our souls and hearts sing. So I like to help you with both – the problems that need resolving and the joys you can seek.
The shape of our lives is made up of two elements:
- how we respond to the actions of others or the things life presents to us,
- the conscious choices we make and actions we take.
Our life now is based on our history, it’s a combination of how we’ve responded to our experiences and the choices we’ve made. We are living out the consequences of decisions and responses made 5, 10, 20 or even 50 years ago. Similarly, how our life will look in a few years will be based on the responses and decisions we make now. This is where mindfulness is wonderfully helpful as it helps us get a better grasp of what we do and the consequences of it.
If we do less of what makes us unhappy and more of what does make us happy there can be only one possible outcome; a more peaceful, happier life.
Jack Roberts’ Background
I started off my working career in the business world and managed teams of people but decided in 2004 that I wanted to set up on my own, after 20 years or so being employed by other people. I set up as a marketing consultant working with small and micro-businesses but realised that I am naturally a teacher, guide and mentor so switched to working with adults looking for career development and professional qualifications in subjects such as marketing, project management and procurement.
I also started exploring therapy and spirituality around the same time as I set up my business and this has become my main focus now. Even in the corporate world I tended to be the one who would mentor staff and deliver training courses, so being a mindfulness meditation teacher, mentor and coach feels like a culmination of 30 years of helping people make the most of themselves and learning how to think and live in more appropriate ways.
Being able to see the world in different ways and having flexible thinking means you are better able to navigate the world and make decisions that help bring more happiness, less unhappiness and ultimately more satisfaction and peace.
